BLADES
Doctor-Africa
“These insects are driving me crazy.” The young woman said as she swatted at the flies buzzing around the boat. The young native boy just smiled and nodded as he grabbed her hand to help down. She followed him through the wooded area to the thatched huts. As she walked down the path, she was reminded of the commercial she used to watch in the U.S. Her eyes tear up as she saw the mess these people lived in. They grinned and waved at her as if unaware of their plight. As she approached the great hut in the center of the village, a frail elder of the tribe greets her. One of the natives she brought with her acted as her interpreter between the two of them. He expressed his concern about the diseases that have ravished his tiny village. She promised to do everything she could to help them with the great medicines she has brought with her. She asked the great elder’s permission to give his tribal member shots and medicines. He granted her request with a look of doubt.
“Miss Annis.” Her companion spoke softly to the woman before him. “You are so young to help.”
She smiled at him and took his arm in hers.
“I went to school in the United States so I can help my people.” She said with a smile. “Believe me, I am up for the job.” He shook his head in agreement as he showed her to the hut they had prepared for her. It was a simple place with a thatched bed and a nightstand that they brought in for her.
They had unloaded the boat and set up a make shift hospital for the doctor. She gave the first shot to the elder to show that it would not hurt anyone. He smiled a toothless grin and shook his great stick at his people to let them know he was okay.
That evening they held a feast making her the quest of honor. In the late night sky, Annis sees a reflection of light in the distance. Her host told her that it is Embogway, an evil spirit that lived not far from the village. She retired to her hut and waited as the rest of the tribe made their way to bed. She decided to explore and she grabbed her flashlight to follow the glowing light. In the moonlight, she saw the gleam that had attracted her early. As she got closer she saw the ruins of an old building. In one of the walls on a shelf, a sword laid with a sparkling cat’s eye at the top. She cleared the brush away to get a closer look at it. As she reached for it, the sword seemed to fall into her hands. She felt a slight tingle as the hilt touched her hand. As she caressed it, she could feel the power pulse through her body. Annis grabbed it and held it up to the light. She felt that it had been waiting for her and she wrapped it up in her arms.
Back at the hut, she slipped it under the bed. Annis fell into her bed, exhausted from the day’s events. She felt a pride at her decision to come here. Her parents had died when she was young leaving her well provided for but alone. She decided at that early age not to let anyone suffer as she had.
Sleep came quickly to the woman but she has dreams of woman who offered her wealth and power. She showed her the power as she caused a tidal wave drowning thousands of people. She awakened with tears streaming down her cheeks. A scream from outside her hut made Annis sit straight up in her bed.
She looked outside her hut and saw people running around in total panic. She grabbed at one of the women who ran by. The woman pointed with wide eyes at a hut a couple of feet away and broke loose from her grip. In the moonlight, Annis could see a huge lion with a child’s body in his mouth. It was tearing and ripping the child apart as it looked at her with a hideous grin. Dropping the child it slowly began to walk towards the doctor.
Annis ducked into her hut and grabbed at the sword that she had hidden under her bed.
“Come on.” She screamed as she walked outside to face the killer. “I am not afraid of you.” She yelled at the big cat as it circled the little woman. As it jumped at her, she felt the sword pull and slice through the air. The electricity crackled around them and the lion’s head rolled to the side as it fell to the ground.
The sword pulled the woman up by her arms and surrounded her with an electrical whorl. Her eyes closed and her body went limp. Slowly the electricity died and she floated to the ground. “Defend yourself-Save the world” flashed in the lion’s blood on the blade of her sword. The hilt burnt her hands as she slowly shook her head in disbelief. The blood melted into the cat’s eye and she rose to her feet. Surrounding her the tribe people bowed to their great protectress.
