SEVEN BLADES-LAWYER

BLADES

Lawyer-Madrid, Spain

Brice’s life back home was so different and so boring she was not looking forward to going home again. Her friend, Kali, took the trip with her this time. It was better to have someone who understood the way the world was now and not “Back in the old days”.
The old house was the same as she had left it many years ago and she felt the same old crushing atmosphere weigh in on her.
“It’s like I never left.” She said as they put down their suitcases.
“Honey, is that you?” the voice of an older woman came from the other room.
“Yes, mother.” Brice cringed as she answered.
“Hold back the criticism.” She thought to herself as she hugged the old woman in the foyer.
“Mom, this is Kali and she will be going with us for the reading of the will.” She said as Kali put out her hand. Her mother shook it as she gave Brice a look of dismay.
“Honey, don’t you think this is a personal matter?” she said quietly.
“No.” The young woman snapped as she grabbed her suitcase. “Come on Kali I’ll show you where we sleep in this museum.”
The walls of the law office welcomed her as she and her mom came in for the reading of the will. Kali told Brice she had a bad case of jet lag and would rather still at the villa.
“As your uncle had no other living relatives, you and your mother received everything he owned including a home in Barcelona.”
“Cool, now I don’t have to work so hard.” Brice smiled with a cocky look.
“Let’s drive out there and explore.” She said as she tugged on her mother’s arm. Her mother looked at her I disbelief.
“A man has died and all you can think about is raiding his home. Really, Brice where did I go wrong?”
“Fine, then don’t go. Kali and I will go by ourselves. I know the way there, so where’s the key?” Her mother shook her head as she handed the girl the key.
Brice’s copper red hair flies with the wind as she went through the streets to reach her reward.
“This is great.” Kali said as she shook her blonde head in the wind. The tires screeched as she hits the driveway of the old house with her little convertible. The two girls laughed with excitement and jumped out as they looked at the large home before them.
“Some dump.” Brice said as she entered the foyer of the musty, old house.
“I don’t know. It seems kind of exciting. Like a treasure hunt.” Kali’s eyes adjusted to the dim light streaming in from the dirty windows. Everything was covered in white sheets and plastic. Dust and cobwebs were everywhere as the girls entered the first room. Brice flipped a sheet up to reveal an old sofa. She coughed and swished her hand in the air at the dust as it rose around her and Kali. She investigated each part of the house flipping up covers and fighting the dust. She ended her journey in a large room with books lining the walls.
“Well, well. What do we have here?” she spotted a square shape under a sheet.
“Look. Kali. A fish tank maybe?” She removed the cover to reveal a beautiful Rapier sword encased in glass. In the hilt an opal gleamed in the dim light.
“Nice prize.” She muttered as she looked around for a way to get into the case. She found a glass scorpion paperweight under a sheet covering an old desk.
“This will do for now.” She said as she dropped the paperweight on top of the glass case. The glass shattered into a million shards and the sword fell to the floor. As she picked up her prize she noticed an opening in the bottom of the case. Holding the sword close to her as reached into the bottom and pulled out an old scroll sealed in red wax.
“Finally my fortune.” She broke the seal and opened the parchment. On it was a sketch of seven swords and beneath each one were words in an ancient tongue she did not understand.
“Kali, have you ever seen any language like this?’ she asked her friend as she spread the scroll across the covered desk. “There are seven of these babies around and we could make a fortune if we can find them all.”
“I have no clue what language this is but the sword is in pristine condition.” She said as ran her hand across the blade.
“This is really rotten.” Brice said as she looked at the document. “Now I need an interpreter.”
She gathered up her prizes and headed for her mother’s home. As she retired to her room, Brice put the sword in an umbrella stand by her door. She opened the scroll again on her bed as she tried to figure out what language it was written in. She gave up and put the rolled up scroll on her nightstand and shut off her light.
In her dreams a beautiful woman appeared and offered eternal wealth and beauty to the savior of the earth. She tells Brice of the wonderful magic she can do by just destroying each sword and collecting the crystals. She showed her power by as she created a volcano and destroyed an entire town.
The next day Brice woke up and found the sword at her side. The morning paper came up with her breakfast. As she opened it the first page is covered with the tragic pictures of a volcano that erupted in South America and wiped out several towns in its path.
“I am impressed.” She said as she read the story. “I’ve got to get this translated and find the swords.”
